DANCE PROGRAMS

GROUP & 1:1 DANCE

JAZZ

The most common dance style in Australia. This upbeat, cardio intensive style of dance is derived from ballet, but allows the exploration of movement to range of music and influences . Consisting of a warm, corner work, a dance routine and cool down, your child will emerge with more flexibility,
musicality, strength and ability to transfer these dance skills to other genres. We have classes for all ages and abilities and recommend anyone who wants to take dance seriously take at least one jazz class.

TAP

Tap dancing is an incredible way to build rhythm and timing skills - all whilst making a lot of fun sounds! Tap strengthens ankles and increases ankle stability. It takes a lot of cocus to make new shapes with different parts of your feet so our brains love this class! A style of dance dear to our heart, tap provides a space for rhythm focussed dancing perfect for those who would benefit from sensory feedback including vibrations and predictable, low frequency noise, sort of like drumming, to regulate. Your child will learn to create rhythms and make noise with their feet while improving musicality and timing, and learning a dance routine with the group. The class will also include an emphasis on body percussion, balance and coordination which is perfect for students who have these skills as a part of their goals. Tap shoes are required for this class and can be ordered from the studio.

BALLET

It is a fact that all dance technique stemmed from this classic style of dance. A must for any dancer wanting to progress or dance competitively, ballet is a fantastic way to increase core strength, balance, muscle strength, flexibility and increase range of motion. Class will including barre work, centrework and cornerwork, where there will be a focus on posture, alignment, foot work, balance and core strength, vestibular stimulation and endurance, gross muscle strength and coordination. Ballet is an expressive and traditional style of dance we know your child will love!

CONTEMPORARY / LYRICAL

This style of dance uses expressive, creative movement derived from ballet. But there are no rules here! Move your body in new and exciting ways. Create new shapes. Express emotions in a safe environment through dance. A favourite for most dancers this style complements ballet and jazz for an all-rounded dance skill set.

YOUNGSTARS

A fun and engaging program including dance and musical games. Your children will use teamwork, attention, listening and motor planning skills to engage in dance warm up, corner work, and partner work. They will also learn a dance routine which changes every 5 - 6 weeks, increasing their memory and confidence with their own bodies and within a group. Our fun musical games and activities will make your kids come home happy and excited for the next class. Thinking about singing lessons for your child? This class also provides an intro to singing with Perform Ability where your child can start to increase their speech volume, clarity and confidence. Parents are welcome to join in so bring your dancing shoes!

DANCEPLAY

DancePlay is a class designed for playgroup aged children and their parents. In this class the students will start to get to know their body and voice through musical play. We engage the students with story time, dance time, singing, nursery rhymes, ribbons and scarves and more - So fun parents will want to join in too! This class will help your child increase their fine and gross motor skills, attention, ability to follow directions, auditory and visual discrimination and early social skills like turn-taking and introducing yourself to others. What a wonderful way to meet new parents in the community whilst you and your child gain motor, rhythmic and sensory skills.

CHEER LEVEL 1

Ready? Okay! Let's do some high energy team work building! It's time to learn to trust your fellow dancers, make new shapes and build endurance to some pretty epic tunes. All Star Cheerleading Level 1 is the first step young Cheerleaders take in the sport. Most Cheerleaders at this level have never cheered before or have not cheered for long. The goal at this level is to provide introductions to basic stunting, jumps, and dance. Yep, that means put the pom poms away and learn some proper, american style cheerleading - lifts and all! As a team sport, there is something for everyone in this class so we recommend you give it a go!

MINI ACRO & ACRO LEVEL 1

Students will learn basic tumbling skills as well as skills that will focus on improving balance, flexibility, and strength. Skills of focus include: Rolls, cartwheel, Somersaults, Gallops, Bridge, Donkey kick, L handstand, Skipping.

MUSIC & MOVEMENT (THE ‘O.G’ PERFORM ABILITY)

Our Music & Movement classes are full of energy! This program is our most popular within disability service providers and schools. Using sensory tools, seated versions and engaging songs, this class truly has something for everyone.

For a long time, this was our most popular class! Great for people who are less mobile, older students or for those who prefer seated dancing although this doesn’t mean you won;t be encouraged to get on your feet for parts of the class! Fave hits from 70s till now. Lots of props involved including balls, ribbons, limbo sticks, pom poms, parachutes and so much more. Singing is encouraged and carers are encouraged to join in.

PERFORMANCE TROUPE

Perform Ability performs at more than 20+ events per year at local big city performances. This is a commitment class and students must attend at least 1 ballet , dance technique or jazz class per week to be a part of this troupe. It is expected that students will be in attendance for 90 - 100% of events throughout the year.

SALSA - partner dance

Our instructors have been waiting to teach on the Central Coast, after learning and performing latin dance in Newcastle, Central coast and Sydney, and the world! Salsa dancing is a staple for parterwork, and combines smooth fluid movements with spicy latin footwork and beats. It’s also a fantastic way to build social skills and meet new people. Come to the party! Heels for ladies are optional.

BACHATA - partner dance

Salsa’s more sensual and sophisticated sibling, bachata has become a most-loved style of latin dance. This slower partner-dance allows for flowing, stretching and emoting through the movement while creating shapes with your partner and team. This is the style of dance Perform Ability took some students to the World Latin Dance Cup with, and our students still like to social dance with other latin dance schools including the prestigious Latin Dance Australia in Sydney.

YOGA

Yoga has been around for 5000 years and there’s a reason people are still doing it! Well known to calm and strengthen the body, this class is worth doing whether you are a dancer or not. Our yoga classes are taught by a certified Yoga instructor and focus on calming the nervous system through breathing techniques and strengthening the body with strong holds and fiery movements. Please bring your own mat.
